If you’re based in London or near the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight could make for a brilliant day trip. The island features a range of endless beaches, coastal walks and historical attractions that will keep you entertained all day long.
How to get to the Isle of Wight
There are three different car ferry services that run from several ports on the south coast to various destinations on the island. The Lymington ferry will take you to Yarmouth, the Southampton ferry will take you to Cowes and the Portsmouth ferry will take you to Fishbourne. Of course, once you’re on the island it’s very easy to travel between these locations in your car. It takes just under half an hour to travel from Yarmouth to Cowes for example.
So just drive to the port that’s most convenient for you, hop on the car ferry and voila, you’re on another island. Please follow all government guidelines when planning your trip.
5 Things to do on the Isle of Wight
Despite it being a relatively small island, you’re almost spoilt for choice once you get there. We’ve tried to narrow down our 5 favourite activities to make your planning a bit easier!
1. Osborne House
If you’ve taken the Portsmouth ferry, you’ll be perfectly positioned to view this beautiful Victorian house, based in East Cowes. Designed by Prince Albert in the style of an Italian renaissance Palazzo, the house was built as a summer home for him and his wife, Queen Victoria. They chose the setting on the Isle of Wight as the sweeping views of the Solent reminded the royal couple of the Italian Bay of Naples.
2. Ventnor Beach
Whilst there are endless beaches to choose from – it is an island after all! – one of our favourites is the south-facing Ventnor beach, situated on the southernmost part of the Isle of Wight. It’s iconic golden sand and red shingle is nestled in a bay overlooked by Ventnor, a Victorian coastal town. It’s also home to vintage beach huts that can be hired for the day.
3. The Needles
Perhaps the most well-known and most frequently photographed feature of the Isle of Wight is the Needles. The red and white lighthouse standing alone at the tip of a series of white rocks in the midst of a vast ocean, is a view that can’t be missed. To make the most of the experience, try out the chairlift ride that takes you from the tip of the spectacular cliffs, passed the coloured sands and right to down to the beach.
4. Blackgang Chine
If you’re after a more family-oriented activity, one of the best options is Blackgang Chine, the UK’s oldest theme park. From roller-coaster rides to waterslides to fantastical themed towns, there’s something for all the family to enjoy, all set among breathtaking coastal views.
5. Isle of Wight Coastal Footpath
If you fancy a more active day trip, look no further than the Isle of Wight Coastal Footpath. Whilst the path traverses most of Isle of Wight, our favourite stretch is the Yarmouth to Brighstone walk. It will take you past several iconic landmarks, including the Needles, Alum Bay and Hanover Point.
